June 29, '03 - Mt. Kiscso, NY to Westport, CT
All good things must end and today was it for Geezerpalooza. Pete, Krista and I left Mt. Kiscso under sunny skies and a temperature of 68 degrees. This was the first nice day New Yorkers and New Englanders had on a weekend in almost 9 weeks so the whole world was out and about. We saw bicyclists everywhere. We had a beautiful 10-mile ride around a reservoir in New York and then crossed over into Connecticut just outside Ridgefield. We were very close to Jill and Paul Jordan's home, Jill is the youngest of JoAnne and Dick Smiths four children, so we stopped to see them plus older son Nikos and Hannah, Lucas and Vaughn. Then it was back on the bikes and a quick fifteen miles downhill to Westport, Ct. We stopped at my sister Mari's house, two miles from Campo Beach, and then it was on to the Atlantic. Yes, I am aware it is really Long Island Sound but it is Atlantic saltwater to me. We had a great party at the beach thanks to Mari and Erin. Mari's daughters Brooke and Meagen were there, so was Brooke's mate Chris. It was great having Krista, Pete and the Killer B's Blake and Brett plus, Erin and Gary and Hailey, the Jordan clan showed up and we all had a grand time. What we really missed were Becca, Drew and Emerson being there but we will see them in a couple of weeks. At the beach celebration there was wheel dipping, hitting golf balls into the ocean, pouring the water from the Pacific that I had collected in Oregon and Jan had transported across the US into the Atlantic, Pete and Krista supplied a bottle of Dom Pergnon (I don't really like champagne but Dom Pergnon I find I don't dislike as much as that terrible stuff they used to serve on Western Airlines and wasn't that a long time ago) and Erin and Gary provided framed specially written certificates to both Jan and myself. AAh Jan, there is no way this trip would have happened without her. In addition, speaking of thank you's this website would not have happened without Drew and Becca Damiano back in Parker, Colorado. I e-mailed information to them on a daily basis and they got it up on the website quickly. This pedalnputt.com would not have happened without them. And the proof of that statement was in the pudding when they vacationed on St. John and I tried to do the website myself in Nebraska. It was not pleasant for either the reader or the writer.
Last night, as the sun was setting, we picked up our area of the beach and headed back to my sister's house. I grabbed my bike for one last Geezerpalooza ride. Pedaling through the dark I thought back to the previous 10 weeks knowing they would never be duplicated. Nor should they. You do something once it is an adventure. Do it twice it becomes a job. However, this has been the greatest adventure of my life. Duplicating the excitement of Geezerpalooza will be hard to do. And that thought makes me very sad. Miles ridden today 43...total trip miles 3779.
