Two days after Easter 2003 Dick Maynard, 63, and Gere Smith, 64, plan to depart Florence, Oregon, with their golf clubs literally in tow behind their bicycles to pedal and putt their way across the United States. Gere, a retired professor of Landscape Architecture from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo promises only to hang around through Yellowstone National Park. From that point on it will be a day to day decision as to whether he really wants to deal on a daily basis with Wyoming, Nebraska and Maynard or head home to California to something more interesting like shopping for specials at Trader Joe's. Maynard, a retired radio station owner from Grand Junction, Colorado, is committed to riding and golfing to his sister's house in Westport, Connecticut. How strong that commitment is will be tested almost daily by rain, headwinds and Smith. Watch PedalnPutt.com for details of this epic journey. Can Smith get a birdie in Idaho? Can Maynard fix a flat in a snowstorm? Details are coming soon to a computer near you.
